Having earned the Royal Horticultural Society's Award for Garden Merit, here's a real prize of a palm tree (for it is, indeed, a palm).

Very mysteriously, it is not known in the wild. All known plants come from cultivated groups in China and they have been decorating palaces in Japan since the Edo period (1603-1868). Over time the Rhapis has meandered its way to Europe, and later to America, where its low demand for humidity and a tolerance of shade have made it a popular indoor plant.

Care tips

Water frequently and thoroughly but do allow the soil to dry a little between soaks.

Use some fertiliser during warmer months (little and often is best for consistent growth). Water less frequently during colder months.

Happy in shade, it will really shine given higher levels of light. A bright East or West aspect is ideal.

Dust the leaves regularly using a soft cloth to keep them looking their glossy best.
