Grown around the world as an ornamental plant, in its native India people guide the roots of these impressive trees over chasms to create living bridges.

The dark and handsome 'Robusta' form is a cultivated variety developed for its deep green and glossy foliage. Also known as the Rubber Tree (named so for the latex-like sap which oozes from the stems when cut) Ficus elastica is a member of the huge fig family, and has been in home cultivation for decades.

Given warmth, light and a consistent watering regime you will have a robust and reliable companion for many years.

In cultivation it prefers bright sunlight but not hot temperatures. An East or West-facing aspect is ideal. If North facing, ensure that the tree is placed as close as possible to the natural light source.

Care tips

It has a degree of tolerance for drought, but coming from wet tropical regions it prefers a regular watering routine: allow the top 4-5 cm of soil to dry before giving a thorough drench. Do not let the pot sit in excess water.

Dust the broad leaves regularly or, even better, put the plant in the shower to get 'rained' on.
